During one of my most memorable weekend getaways, I grabbed a golf club for the first time ever and stepped onto the course. My initiation into the world of golf took place at Falcon Golf & Country Club. The 9-hole course is perched on the tranquil shores of Lake Muhazi.
It wasn't my first time there. I had visited the establishment before. During one of those earlier visits, I stood quietly on the edge of the fairway, watching seasoned golfers with fascination. They moved with a calm rhythm—swinging, walking, putting—communicating in golf lingo that felt foreign yet captivating. The precision, the etiquette, the unspoken rules of the game intrigued me. It was during that visit that the seeds of interest were sown.
My first training session went better than expected. Following guidance from my coach, I worked on the basics—stance, grip, swing mechanics—and picked up essential golf terminology. It felt strange in the beginning. One swing at a time, I started getting comfortable. Who knows, this little experiment might just evolve into a full membership.
Maybe it’s time I transition to a new sport. As I get older, I am coming to terms with the fact that my basketball playing days are winding down. And when I finally hang up my sneakers for good, a second act on manicured greens might be just what I need.
Maybe this wasn't a mere introduction to a new sport. What if the experience was meant to reflect a new way of navigating life? Golf, with its measured pace, offers a refreshing contrast to the fast, adrenaline-filled world of basketball.
