There are places that naturally invite unhurried conversation and quiet reflection. Isange Paradise Resort is one of them.
That is where the 139th Turning Pages Book Club session took place, bringing together university students and a couple of tour operators.
At the center of the session was a booklet titled Muhazi Belt, drawn from the Afrika Nzuri Library. It holds fragments of memory from my journey around Lake Muhazi--those in-between moments rarely captured in brochures: unplanned stops, memorable encounters, coffee breaks, and nights along tranquil shores. And of course, the lake itself, stretching across districts like a quiet thread tying everything together.
We began with our customary introductions. Then the book opened something wider. Comments came, questions followed, and gradually the conversation drifted beyond the lake.
What started as reflections on a single body of water expanded into something larger: travel, memory, place, and the meaning we attach to movement. The group began to take apart ideas and rebuild them piece by piece until a wider picture began to emerge.
At some point, we drew inspiration from one of the participants. His journey began while he was still a student, when a simple challenge opened an unexpected path. After his roommate moved out, he could no longer afford the rent alone. To keep the house, he listed it on Airbnb and started hosting guests.
What began as a practical solution soon revealed a wider opportunity. As he welcomed travelers, he naturally began showing them around, and step by step, his role in tourism took shape. Today, he is the founder of FRAMA Nature Adventure, the owner of FRAMA Eco-Lodge on Batutsi Island in Lake Burera, and Kwanzaa House, which offers homestay experiences for travelers visiting the Twin Lakes.
Then came a moment that set this session apart, making it unlike the 138 that came before it.
For the first time since Turning Pages began, participants left not only with free books, but with something even more meaningful: a special package that will enable each of them to own a website. Powerful digital spaces where their writing can live, breathe, and be shared with the world.
They are all writers in their own right, still shaping their voices, still seeking traction. And yet, in that room, it was clear that something had already taken root. Each of them carries stories that deserve to be told.
Turning Pages, in its own quiet way, is building the enabling infrastructure for those voices.
We closed the session by acknowledging the sponsors who made the Muhazi journey possible, the journey that eventually gave birth to Muhazi Belt. I also took a moment to recognize those who supported the session itself. A quiet appreciation for the unseen hands that keep stories moving.
