Books and Breezes at Kingfisher Resort

It was still early at Kingfisher Resort. In one quiet corner of the open-air lounge, a small group of hospitality personnel from different hotels gathered—not for work, but for a shared literary journey. They were visiting Kingfisher, courtesy of Afrika Nzuri Publishers and its partners, for a day that promised both pages and play.

Two weeks earlier, I had sent each participant an e-book version of The Akagera Expedition. My 20-page booklets—packed with vivid photos and designed like sleek travel magazines—are easy to flip through and hard to put down. By the time we met, everyone had already explored the sweeping landscapes and captivating moments within its pages. Even better, every participant had been to Akagera National Park. They didn’t just imagine the book’s winding trails and glinting lakes—they had walked them, felt the heat, and heard the wild calls that still echoed between the lines.

The gathering was casual, the conversation spontaneous. From hot-air balloon rides over the park to boating on Lake Ihema, from the thrill of a game drive to the smoky aroma of a barbecue at Mihindi Campsite & Café—we revisited Akagera without ever leaving our chairs. Laughter and storytelling flowed easily, each voice adding a fresh splash of color to the park’s portrait.

Around us, the resort was waking up. A few patrons lounged in the nearest cabana, sipping cold drinks in the shade. A couple of swimmers moved lazily through the pool, while out on Lake Muhazi, the resort’s boat glided seamlessly from the Rwesero parking lot, carrying a lively group of young visitors for a day out.

After our reading session, the group would spend the rest of the day indulging in the exciting activities offered by our host—from exploring the lake by boat to savoring the resort’s lakeside charm. But in that first hour, before the adventure truly began, hospitality met the wild heart of Rwanda—one page at a time.
