Kigali is often admired for its clean streets, immaculate green median strips, and the well-paved pedestrian walkways that gracefully line its roads. But beyond the city’s polished avenues lies a rugged side that few people experience. Recently, I set out to explore that side on an adventure bike, taking on the thrilling loop around Mount Kigali—a trail that offers one of the most exhilarating off-road riding experiences in the capital.
From the moment the tires left the smooth pavement and bit into the dirt, the adventure began.The trail quickly plunged into thick forests. The path twisted and climbed through steep gradients, demanding full concentration and steady throttle control. At certain points, the terrain turned muddy, forcing me to carefully navigate slippery stretches where one wrong move could easily send a rider sliding. It was challenging, raw, and deeply satisfying—the kind of riding that makes adventure bikes feel truly at home.
As the trail wound its way around the mountain, the scenery constantly shifted, revealing breathtaking perspectives of Kigali and beyond. On one side of the elevation, the city unfolded dramatically below. Kigali’s soaring skyline rose from the hills like a modern oasis. From that vantage point, the capital appeared both vibrant and serene—a living portrait of a city steadily rising among the hills. Then, just a few turns later, the landscape changed entirely.
On the opposite side of the loop, the view opened toward the Nyabarongo River, quietly snaking through a wide valley. Its lush green banks stretched far into the distance, creating a peaceful contrast to the city skyline seen earlier. I couldn’t resist stopping the bike for a moment, removing my helmet, and simply taking it all in. The river, the greenery, and the silence of the hills formed a scene that felt worlds away from the urban bustle. And the panoramas didn’t end there.
At different points along the loop, the mountain offered sweeping views of some of Kigali’s most recognizable elevations. Rebero Hill appeared on the horizon, while the silhouettes of Mount Jali and Mount Kanyinya rose proudly in the distance. Standing there, it felt as though the entire geography of Kigali had unfolded in a single grand panorama.
It is not just about the adrenaline of off-roading—though the steep climbs, forest trails, and muddy stretches certainly deliver that. It is about discovering how dramatically the landscape changes within a short distance from the city center. Within the span of one ride, you experience dense forests, sweeping valleys, mighty rivers, and breathtaking city views.
For adventure riders in Kigali, this loop is more than just a trail. It is a reminder that even in a rapidly modernizing capital, the wild beauty of Rwanda’s hills is never far away.
