It’s Sunday, the weekend slipping away faster than I’d like. Around 1 p.m., under a clear, sunny sky, I decided to escape Kigali for a few hours. Lakes surround the city, each promising a quick dose of nature, but today I settled on Lake Mirayi in neighboring Bugesera District — just the right distance for a spontaneous afternoon ride.
I wasn’t alone on the road. A few other bikers were heading the same way, but since I left before them, I made a quick stop at Gisa's Coffee in Nyamata. Lunch was simple and satisfying: a chicken wrap as I watched the traffic and the slow hum of the town around me. When the other bikers caught up, we shared a few laughs and a short ride to Lujo Motel, their usual hangout. That wasn’t my destination — I had a lake to reach.
Arriving atBugesera Lake Resort, nestled on the tranquil shore of Lake Mirayi, I wasted no time. A boat awaited, and this one was special: it could either use an engine or pedal like a bicycle. Exercise was calling my name, so I hopped on and started pedaling, feeling the rhythmic push of my legs against the pedals while gliding over calm waters. Sunlight danced on the lake’s surface, a gentle breeze kissed my face, and the quiet lapping of water set the perfect soundtrack for the afternoon.
There’s always something interesting to do here. Whether it’s paddling across the lake, soaking in the scenery, or simply drifting along with your thoughts, the lake offers a brief escape from city life — enough to refresh your spirit before the week begins.
As the sun began its slow descent, I hopped off the boat, stretched my legs, and took one last look at the sparkling waters of Lake Mirayi. The ride back to Kigali promised the usual traffic and city noise, but I carried with me a pocket of calm, laughter, and the kind of spontaneous adventure that makes weekends memorable. Sometimes, all it takes is an hour’s ride, a lake, and a little curiosity to remind you why getting away — even for a few hours — is always worth it.
