After days of trekking in the Northern Province of Rwanda, the thought of a calm interlude was irresistible. My destination: Peace Haven Island on Lake Ruhondo, a serene getaway that promises both relaxation and breathtaking scenery.
The journey to the island is an adventure in itself. Boarding a boat, I felt the cool lake breeze against my face as the vessel glided across the sparkling waters. Small islands dotted the lake like emerald gems, while the nearest volcanoes—Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo—towered in the distance, their peaks brushing the clouds.
Upon arrival, I swapped my hiking boots for flip-flops and wandered along the shoreline, letting the gentle lapping of the water and the rustle of leaves restore my energy. The tranquility and peace of mind experienced here is unmatched.
As night fell, I joined fellow tourists around the campfire, sharing stories under a sky littered with stars. Lanterns from passing fishing boats glittered on the water like pieces of diamond. In the morning, the sun’s reflection on the lake and the glowing horizon left me in awe, reminding me why a simple escape to an island can feel like discovering an entirely new world.
