I was in Nyankora on a business trip. As usual, I planned to spend the night at Akagera Homestay.
I know the place well. It is my usual stop whenever I am in this part of Kayonza, just outside Akagera National Park. It is affordable, comfortable, and you don't have to spend a fortune to sleep near the park.
Except, on this particular visit, there was no room for me.
The homestay was fully booked.
No room, no problem.
My host simply pitched a tent for me at his newly unveiled campsite.
The tent wasn't exactly roughing it. There was a comfortable mattress, clean bedsheets, and a blanket. I had everything I needed for a good night's sleep, only this time I was sleeping under canvas instead of a roof.
To be honest, I liked it.
There was something about the tent that gave the night a different feeling. A little more wild. A little more adventurous. It felt like a real getaway, even though I was actually in Nyankora for work.
Nyankora is in Rwinkwavu Sector, Kayonza District. If you have been to Akagera National Park, you have passed through it. It is the last settlement you drive through before entering the animal kingdom.
I came to Nyankora for business, but the tent gave me a little adventure I wasn't expecting.
Sometimes, having no room is not such a bad thing after all.
