Kigali is often admired for its clean streets, landscaped medians and well-paved pedestrian walkways. But beyond the city's polished avenues lies a rugged side that offers a different kind of adventure. I discovered it while exploring the loop around Mount Kigali on my adventure bike. The ride revealed a side of the capital that few visitors get to experience.
From the moment my tires left the smooth pavement and hit the dirt, the adventure began. The trail took me through thick forests, winding paths and steep climbs that demanded concentration and careful throttle control. Some sections were muddy and slippery, requiring extra caution to navigate. It was challenging, raw and deeply satisfying. This was the kind of terrain where adventure bikes truly come into their own.
As the trail wound around the mountain, the scenery kept changing. At certain points, sweeping views of Kigali unfolded below me. The city's skyline rose above the surrounding hills, creating a striking picture of a modern capital nestled in a green landscape. Just a few turns later, the scenery changed completely.
On the opposite side of the loop, the view opened toward the Nyabarongo River as it wound through a wide valley. Its lush green banks stretched into the distance, offering a peaceful contrast to the city skyline. I stopped the bike, removed my helmet and took in the scenery. The river, the greenery and the quiet of the hills made it feel as though I was far removed from the bustle of the city.
The panoramas continued along the route. Rebero Hill appeared on the horizon, while the silhouettes of Mount Jali and Mount Kanyinya rose in the distance. From these vantage points, it felt as though much of Kigali's remarkable landscape had unfolded before me.
The Mount Kigali loop offers more than the thrill of off-road riding. The steep climbs, forest trails and muddy stretches provide a satisfying challenge, but the real reward lies in discovering how dramatically the landscape changes within a short distance of the city center. In one ride, I experienced dense forests, sweeping valleys, the Nyabarongo River and spectacular views of Kigali. For adventure riders, this is an experience worth discovering.
