It’s April 26, 2026, and I have just left Mombasa.
I am on my way back to Kigali, already looking back on a trip that gave me plenty to write about and lots to talk about during future Turning Pages sessions.
For the rest of the year, my travels will mostly keep me in Rwanda. I have Rwandan district books to finish, a library to build, and partnerships to forge.
But sometime in February next year, I want to spend a few days in another country.
The question is: where?
Uganda?
Ethiopia?
I haven’t decided yet.
Our flight continues, and then we land briefly in Zanzibar. Just a 45-minute layover before we take off again for Kigali.
I am still thinking about my next destination outside the Land of 1,000 Hills.
Then, before we even unbuckle our seat belts, I look through the window.
And there it is.
Zanzibar.
From above, it looks almost as if someone has laid out the invitation personally for me. Streets. Beaches. Coconut trees. Boats. Blue water stretching into the distance.
I stare through the window.
Why am I thinking so hard? I think I’ve just found my answer.
My next destination is right there.
Hello, Zanzibar. I will see you in February.
